Acorn is designed to support plugins which can, within reasonable
bounds, redefine the way the parser works. Plugins can add new token
types and new tokenizer contexts (if necessary), and extend methods in
the parser object. This is not a clean, elegant API—using it requires
an understanding of Acorn’s internals, and plugins are likely to break
whenever those internals are significantly changed. But still, it is
without forking all of Acorn. And in principle it is even possible to
combine such plugins, so that if you have, for example, a plugin for
parsing types and a plugin for parsing JSX-style XML literals, you
could load them both and parse code with both JSX tags and types.
A plugin is a function from a parser class to an extended parser
class. Plugins can be used by simply applying them to the
class (or a version of that already extended by another plugin). But
because that gets a little awkward, syntactically, when you are using
multiple plugins, the static method
Parser.extend can be called with
any number of plugin values as arguments to create a
extended by all those plugins. You’ll usually want to create such an
extended class only once, and then repeatedly call
parse on it, to
"// Some bigint + JSX code"
Plugins override methods in their new parser class to implement
additional functionality. It is recommended for a plugin package to
export its plugin function as its default value or, if it takes
configuration parameters, to export a constructor function that
creates the plugin function.
This is what a trivial plugin, which adds a bit of code to the
readToken method, might look like:
"Reading a token!"

Port Side Sheer Strake – Episode 168 – Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat
The weather our here in western Massachusetts has been a bit wacky. Though colder days pushed off the possibility of gluing early in the season, we’re now dealing with really hot days and thunderstorms—but that’s not slowing us down as we scoot along planking on the port side of Arabella.
The sheer strake is of locust, which is a strong, durable and very rotresistant wood that will be perfect for the task of protecting a place on the boat guaranteed to see a lot of wear and tear when docking and boarding or disembarking. .
Meanwhile, volunteers George, Tyler, and Neil work on cleaning up all the surfaces inside the hull in preparation for the next steps. They spent hours cutting back bolts and putting acorn nuts on them, sanding things smooth, and hopefully getting to oiling, though, that may wait till next week.
We hope you enjoy this exciting moment and we thank you for joining us each Friday. There are so many ways to support the project, including sharing this video, which goes a long way to helping friends find us and others who are working in wood, boats, and bigscale DIY projects like Arabella. We’ll see you next Friday!

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38′ wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin’s Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel’s gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they’ve built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.
