Based on research support for MSL instruction in effective content area reading and writing skills, participants receive practical guidelines in simulations to help native and non-native speakers with dyslexia gain these skills. Included are strategies for teachers to quickly analyze text challenges and how to assist students of all grade levels in acquiring self-directed text reading and text composition mechanisms. Resources for
personal use are provided.
About the Presenters:
Elke Schneider received her Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics in 1997 from the University of Eichstäett, Germany where she specialized in foreign/second language learning and learning disabilities. Over the past almost 30 years, she has published and presented nationally and internationally on this topic. In the US and in Europe, she has taught foreign and second languages, special education and literacy education courses. Nationally and internationally, she provides teacher training on multisensory structured metacognitive language (MSML) instruction to native, foreign and second language learners in public and private school settings. She has over 20 years of experience integrating MSML instruction into undergraduate and graduate teacher education programs in special education, literacy and ESOL-related courses at three different state universities (Miami of Ohio, SUNY College at Fredonia, New York, Winthrop University, South Carolina). As full Professor at Winthrop University, she has been COPI and heavily engaged in two large 4-5year federal grants, through which she has prepared hundreds of educators in all disciplines to work with English Language learners using research-evidenced MSML instructional practices. She has also collaborated with the South Carolina Title III Office to train hundreds of ESOL teachers to implement MSML instruction in all five areas of literacy instruction.
Before starting to work at the federal institute BIFIE, Andrea Kulmhofer-Bommer worked at the Department of School Education/Teacher Education, Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz and as a classroom teacher. Currently she is involved in developing diagnostic tests as well as large scale assessments for Austrian EFL students. Andrea does research in Didactics, Language Education and Teacher Education. Her PhD project investigated the fidelity of implementation of a reading program for 3rd grade elementary school students in Austria. Currently, she works on a project investigating the cognitive processes involved in solving reading test items.
